HALL sir JAMES (1761-1832)

Géologue écossais fondateur de la géologie expérimentale, James Hall, né à Dunglass, fait ses études à l’université de Cambridge, puis à l’université d’Édimbourg où il devient l’ami de J. Hutton.

Voulant vérifier les théories de ce dernier sur l’origine des roches, il tente de reproduire celles-ci expérimentalement et il réussit ainsi à obtenir, par refroidissement d’un mélange fondu, de la dolérite, puis il réalise un marbre à partir de roches carbonatées. Au cours de ces expériences, il est amené à poser le rôle de la température comme facteur important dans la genèse des roches ignées. Le résultat de ses expériences fut exposé devant la Société royale d’Édimbourg. Hall était très intéressé par l’architecture. Il fut député de 1807 à 1812.
